The "Vinegar Effect" - Old 8mm Film, fragile films.
Regular 8mm, Regular 8mm, Standard 8mm or Normal 8mm
Older 8mm - Standard 8 - Normal 8 film stock can over time suffer advanced deterioration due to the chemical break down of the acetate film base a condition kown as the "Vinegar Effect" also loosely known as film cancer when an unfortunate consequence of aged film appears to be coated with midlew or fungus in the form of a seemingly white talcum powde coating that is anything but.
The biggest give away that film stock is suffering degradation and decay is the strong vinegar smell which can be quite obnoxious and over powering, hence the term coined aptly as the dreaded "Vinegar Effect".
Film that has started to decompose may still be salvaged and it is worth noting here that this is the preserve of Frame by Frame transfer as sending film so affected for projector based transfer is courting disaster as the 8mm film stock
will most certainly not survive projection due to the fragility of film and the possible warpage that will definitely jam in a prjector-do not do this.
Is the film too far gone for recivery?
Film reels / cans shoudl be inspeced for over all condition, the level of smell is not a good indicator or the recovery potential for the 8mm film stock.
Film stock that is clearly deformed, shrivelled or excessively warped may be too far gone for recovery, the best options are to send 8mm film stock for assessnebt
for recovery. Frame by frame scanning has a lot of latitude not possible in projecor based transfer and each affected film should be carefully evaluated by experienced film technicians.
Historical Importance - Key determination
If your film has a historical value you really should have the 8mm film stock examined by specialists who can advise you on the options.
Avid TechDVD has succesfully transffered hundreds of films affected with the
Vinegar Effect. Vinegar Syndrome.
Some of the film stock we have converted has dated from as far back as 1940 with good to excellent results.
Super 8 - Single 8 film formats
can also suffer the vinegar effect due to the fact that film base in this format can date back to it's inception in 1966 so some of these Super 8 and Fuji Single 8 films are now as much as 40+ years old. Super 8 and Single 8 will not keep any better than Regular 8mm, Regular 8mm, Standard 8mm or Normal 8mm film stocks.
