Mini DV Conversion to DVD.

MiniDV tapes are tiny, only a fraction of the size of other digital video (DV) cassettes.  MiniDV cam corders make shooting video and importing video content to a PC easy.  MiniDVs can be converted fairly easily, even by those with little experience.  MiniDV uses the same compression as DV. MiniDV cassettes are 65 x 48 x 12 mm.  MiniDV tapes can hold about 13 GB of data. MiniDV cameras of course use MiniDV tapes.  MiniDV is the most popular format for digital cam corders today.  MiniDV cam corders have up to 530 lines of resolution, making them an ideal choice for professional video graphers as well as consumers.  MiniDV  cam corders usually connect to a home computer via fire wire, where their video can be edited and put on a VHS tape, burned to DVD, or up loaded to the internet.  Using digital technology, MiniDV captures video and audio on high-density cassette tapes.  The MiniDV format is one of the most commonly used formats for cam corders.  There are many MiniDV cam corders from which to choose, from those designed for the budget-conscious to professional-quality models.  Usually, MiniDV cam corders can be connected to a television or VCR for display or copying purposes.  Despite the fact that MiniDV is highly compatible with a full range of devices, conversion to DVD or other formats may be desired at times.

Converting MiniDV videotapes to DVD

DVD from MiniDV

You have a couple of options for transferring your video tapes at home to DVD from a MiniDV video camera, you can transfer from your MiniDV cam corder directly to a DVD recorder if it is fitted with a fire wire socket, or analog RCA inputs and it couldn't be easier.

There are obvious limitations at doing this when using a DVD recorder to transfer your MiniDV videotapes to DVD.  You have little control over the chapter points (usually five minute chapters), titles are very limited to what you get with your DVD recorder which is pretty basic but nevertheless quite effective for most people's storage and sharing needs.

This is probably the best method to quickly share a DVD you have copied from your MiniDV camera to family members, and it is an excellent way of previewing your MiniDV cam corder masterpiece on television and also saving your hard work onto DVD with the use of your DVD recorder provides you with an instant accessible backup.

MiniDV transfers to DVD using your home computer:

Many enthusiastic MiniDV cam corder owners also transfer their creative art work onto their computer for editing at home which provides far more options and creative opportunities that recording from your MiniDV to DVD recorder just simply cannot match.  You will need your computer do have a fire wire socket, you will also need a fire wire cable which usually comes with the camera so you can download your video onto your hard drive for editing and producing your own DVD.  MiniDV to DVD transfers on your home computer can be readily achieved with some inexpensive versatile software, some that come to mind immediately and readily recognized by most video enthusiasts software packages by Nero which includes Nero vision which provides you with fairly limited but reasonable entry-level editing possibilities, Ulead video studio, Pinnacle Systems Studio and there are a few others that are quite inexpensive.

For the really well heeled and dead serious enthusiast there are of course the more potent programs known as in our Lady editing software packages such as Adobe premiere, Canopus Edius Pro, Avid DV Express  (no relation to Avid Tech)or if you are a Macintosh user, Final Cut Pro.

Of course producing a quality made DVD with an attractive menu and appropriate chapter points to suit your audience and the theme of your video production doesn't end at producing to DVD there are also issues of printing the disc. You would require a high end ink jet printer that can print on the disc surfaces and also provide the opportunity to create attractive covers for your DVD cases.

Video - MiniDV

This format is very popular, as it delivers sound and video that is decidedly sharp and high quality.  These cam corders deliver video that is much clearer than analog cam corders.  Once on the PC, video content can be edited, converted for Internet use, or even burned to a DVD.  Transferring video to a PC can be accomplished using an IEEE-1394 interface.

MiniDV cassettes are 65 x 48 x 12 mm.  Usually, MiniDV cam corders can be connected to a television or VCR for display or copying purposes.  Among digitally recorded cassette tapes, MiniDV tapes are the most widely used.  MiniDV is smaller and the cam corders based on it are usually smaller and weigh less than D8 ones.
