Frame by Frame Telecine

Avid TechDVD is in an unique position in Australia for its technological innovation and equipment resource acquisition program and is second to none in the super 8 to DVD transfer industry, in fact we are Victoria's largest retail film and VHS transfer facility .

In 2008 Avid Tech DVD Transfer Centre acquired the very latest and most current productive film scanning telecine equipment available to date In the DV8 Sniper acquisition which is the latest incarnation of the world recognised best quality affordable telecine frame by frame film scanning units made by moviestuff in Texas USA and takes our film transfer suite to 4 Super 8 / 8mm film scanners.

DV8 Sniper frame by frame telecine equipment innovation

The 2008 DV8 Sniper Telecine Frame by Frame film scanning units incorporate new innovations not previously available in Australia, in fact, Avid Tech's current acquisition is the first of its type in Australia and features some stunning state-of-the-art cutting edge technology and productivity improvements designed for the professional film transfer studio.

Additional software enhancements have also been acquired as well as custom written digital video codecs especially programmed for Avid Tech in Germany that enhances clarity of scanned films, hence the terminology "Clarity of Vision" COV.

No one else can offer the quality of output provided by the DV8 Sniper alongside Avid Tech's client customisation, engineering enhancements and highly desirable additional features demanded by the exacting professional film transfer specialists including total control over colour levels, contrast and colour saturation.

Manual exposure control and semi-automated split exposure patterns which allowed for spot metering, field exposure, and full frame averaged exposure controls are also possible, the newest DV8 Sniper can work wonders with the skilled operator at the helm in joining the use of cutting edge technology and precision engineering of the highest order.

DV8 Sniper 2008 models are now made with some exciting new features that make frame by frame telecine stop motion capture a breeze for the experienced operator, some of the most impressive features are the productivity levels that can be achieved due to a new feature in the audio pulse generator exposure and film advance system that can process up to 15 frames per second and still maintain the ultimate frame by frame telecine stop motion capture method despite the seemingly unbelievable speed which provides an enormous productivity boost for the busy studio, and to be quite honest this latest set of innovations are simply irresistible in the pursuit of technical excellence in film stop motion capture frame by frame.

Audio pulse generator stop motion capture control system

The audio pulse generator replaces the tried and proven cam wheel and Micro switch arrangement which used to trip the mouse and provide the necessary click exposure for each individual frame of film in the stop motion capture software package (of which there are several) where a flat spot on the cam wheel triggers a micro Switch trip as each individual frame was aligned with the scanning head, once the frame was successfully captured by the stop motion capture software, the next frame would advance in perfect sequence awaiting the perfectly timed cam wheel controlled Micro Switch to click on the next frame to capture and so on and so forth until the roll of film was exhausted and fully captured on to a computer's hard drive array (RAID "0"), once all of the frames were collected it was necessary for the computer to compile and assemble all of the individual frames into motion video.  Computer power of the highest order together with high end graphics and super fast hard drive systems and arrays could then provide the assembly task ready for editing.

In the 2008 incarnation of the DV8 Sniper frame by frame telecine system the latest innovation is the audio pulse generator which now does away with the micro switch and works by providing an audio pulse at the precise moment that a film frame is captured thus allowing the advance speed to be higher than the traditional four or eight frames per second of the earlier models of the DV8 Sniper series.  The resultant scan speed is around 15 frames per second providing a productivity boost for the busy super 8 to DVD transfer studio.

The audio pulse generated signal is fed to the computer via an IEEE analogue to digital video converter audio RCA input which controls the stop motion software capture rates and function and so does away with the mechanical activation of the micro switch links to a physical mouse pointing device that previously provided the pulse to trip the exposure and capture of the stop motion software package that captures each single frame of 8mm and super 8mm film ready for editing and transferred to DVD or MiniDV videotapes.

Super 8 -- 8mm scanning speed enhancement:

Running at a frame rate of 15 frames per second for frame by frame stop motion capture has previously been unheard of, this exceptional performance for frame by frame stop motion capture telecine equipment requires some sophistication in software to handle the high speed of film advance and provide accurate frame capture, currently the only software available that can harness this capacity is known as the "Velocity" package and requires to be harnessed with stop motion capture software which can cope with the increased output capability.

There are also innovation benefits in the computerised control box which provides  exposure control with the DV8 Sniper telecine unit which now incorporates control and power supply systems within the base stand unlike the previous modular arrangement.

X-Y scanner Mount

The latest DV8 Sniper systems now incorporate an X-Y Mount for the scanning head which features a precision fore and aft and lateral scanning head positioning mechanism which is controlled by large knobs with a very fine screw thread allowing for precise positioning and critical focusing on the emulsion of the Super 8 or 8mm film being scanned which ensures critical alignment is maintained at all times so that the flat field effect lens is directly square to the film.

Analogue to Digital film conversion

Frame by frame stop motion capture telecine makes for a superior analogue to digital conversions of super 8 and 8mm film to DVD or MiniDV videotapes and with the right equipment film digitisation can also be exported to external hard drives for the home editor.

Super 8 mm telecine - Super 8 to DVD

With the latest advances in technology and innovation of frame by frame Super 8 to DVD film transfer telecine conversions, Avid TechDVD can now offer superior quality transfers that just cannot be matched by any other service provider in Australia. Similar equipment in existence is now old and ournoded technology, trust Avid TechDVD to be at the cuttubg edge of the finest transfer methods.

Complimentary technology

Of course, the very best frame by frame film scanning telecine units require complementary computational power that Avid TechDVD provides for the complete upgrade of all our digital workstations to the latest Quad Core Intel processors, Ultra high end graphics and 10,000 rpm hard drive arrays, highest quality analog to digital converters and hardware encoding systems with the latest Serial ATA DVD ROM DVD burners made by Pioneer, there are no DVD recorders or DVD manufacturing machines as every project is a custom Super 8 to DVD project from start to finish completely controlled and supervised by an experienced professional frame by frame telecine operator and editor.
